Michael's quote from Staring At Sound:

"We're not touchy-feely people, me and Wayne, but I was touched, and I still am to this day very touched, by that song. I know a lot of times we really don't express to each other how much we really care about each other. I think we've decided that it's implicit in our actions, but it's very obvious what Wayne is saying in that song, and it's all reciprocated, of course. We can't have lived this life and not have a deeper feeling that goes beyond friendship, beyond family, in a way that we're just linked so deeply."

In "The Spiderbite Song," Wayne recounts two instances that threatened the lives of Steven and Michael in late 1996, showing a great deal of concern and love for his bandmates.

Steven arrived at Wayne's house to work on compiling the tapes for the third Parking Lot Experiment with a festering wound on his left hand. He told Wayne and Michael that he had been bitten by a small but extremely poisonous brown recluse spider known as a "fiddleback." In reality, he had shot up heroin with a dirty needle and developed a staph infection, though he would not admit this to Wayne until later. Steven spent five days in the hospital and doctors considered amputating his hand. Around the same time, Michael was driving in Oklahoma City and had stopped at an intersection when a stray tire barreled down the street, hit the hood and side of his car, and bounced off, nearly crashing through the windshield right into him.
