Like on The Soft Bulletin, "The Observer" has followed "What Is The Light?" in live shows. The pair was frequently played in The Soft Bulletin era and was used to close out many shows during the Yoshimi period. Since then, it has only made a one-off appearance at Bonnaroo 2007 and was soundchecked for the 2005 Xingolati cruise festival. The backing video consists of changing colored eyes from 2001: A Space Odyssey, changing in time with the drum beat. "The Observer" is one of the few songs to feature Wayne playing live guitar since Clouds Taste Metallic.
