Plastic Jesus

"Plastic Jesus" is a cover of a folk song written by Ed Rush and George Cromarty in 1957 and played by Paul Newman's character in Wayne's favorite film, Cool Hand Luke. On the back of the Transmissions From The Satellite Heart album, it is titled "*******." Aside from "What A Wonderful World," it is the only cover song to appear on a proper Lips studio album.

Wayne's quote from Staring At Sound:

"The movie is about a group of men trying to discover their own possibilities, and Paul Newman becomes the focus of that. I think I saw a parallel there, growing up with my brothers and all their friends and wanting to have experiences that were authentic, and somewhere in there is that rebellion against everyday acceptance and the way things are supposed to be, and the imagery of this isolated guy who has nothing but his own mind to rely on, though he's really doing it with a group of people."

Flaming Lips Version
I don't care if it rains or freezes
Long as I got my plastic Jesus
Sittin' on the dashboard of my car
Comes in colors, pink and pleasant
Glows in the dark, it's iridescent
Take it with you when you travel far

Get yourself a sweet Madonna
Dressed in rhinestones, settin' on a
Pedestal of abalone shells
Goin' 90, I ain't scared
'Cause I got the Virgin Mary
Assuring me that I won't go to hell
