"Mountain Side" has been one of the defining live Flaming Lips songs. When it was performed with Ronald on guitar, it would often be extended, allowing extra guitar texture. During an 11 year absence from the setlist, "Mountain Side" was one of the most requested songs to return to the setlist. A modern version with Steven on guitar was worked up for Bonnaroo 2007 and was subsequently played at nearly every show for the next two years. The backing video featured a rainbow screen and crash test dummy footage at the song's climax. During the middle section, the band experimented with various presentations, including a "sonic war" between Wayne and Steven at Bonnaroo, Wayne shooting the streamer guns at Kliph's cymbals, and Wayne reciting lines from Hawkwind's "Sonic Attack" in San Diego 2007. They finally settled on a keyboard and modified "Taps" autobugle jam reminiscent of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew.
