Wayne's Notes from At War With The Mystics 5.1
We started recording just as one of the biggest snow storms to ever hit Cassadaga was brewing over Lake Erie. Now Cassadaga and Fredonia get a lot of lake effect snow, so when I say "biggest to hit," I mean BIG. But it was also the beginning of April, so in the previous weeks, instead of snow, there had been a lot of rain... so the ground was very soft. SO when the snow came, it piled up in the tree limbs of the giant trees and, after awhile, toppled them... their roots being, essentially, in mud. Anyway... So the toppled trees took power lines down with them and electricity at Dave's studio was kind of come and go. SO we used the time the best we could and, instead of having the entire studio up and running (we were anticipating power outages), we trimmed down to a smaller pro-tools set up and began recording the pedal steel guitar part in the Brian May guitar solo section. We indulged and entertained ourselves the best we could and ended up recording one-hundred pedal steel over-dubs ...all playing different harmonic accents. They are probably most audible on the 5.1 remix. Fifty of them come out of the right front and back and fifty come out of the left.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" was originally recorded for Killer Queen: A Tribute to Queen. The overdubbing of voices during the operatic section gave the initial inspiration for The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song.
